Optical Storage - DVD±RW Installation - Lab 1

Equipment required:

• A desktop PC

• A PC with a DVD reader (your laptop)

• DVD±RW burner

• DVD creation software (supplied with burner)

• blank CD-RW disk

• blank DVD+R disk

• blank DVD+RW disk

PART A - DVD Burner Installation

1. Install a DVD burner.  Internal or external.
2. Install appropriate DVD burner software.
3. Write some data to a CD-RW disk.
4. Attempt to read a CD-RW disk with data on it in a Windows 2000 or earlier operating system. (Can you read it?)
5. Install UDF reader on the Windows 2000 or earlier system so that the CD-ROM drive can read a CD-RW with data on it.
6. Attempt to read the same CD-RW with data on it in a Windows XP or later operating system.  (Can you read it?)
7. Have your instructor verify the above steps.

PART B - DVD Movie Creation

1. Obtain by downloading or other means some movie clips.
2. Create a DVD+R disk with at least one movie clip on it.
3. Play the movie in a DVD player (your laptop will work for this).
4. Create a DVD+RW disk with data on it.
5. Remove some of the data on the DVD+RW disk.
6. Write some more data to the DVD+RW disk.
7. Have your instructor verify the above steps.
